”LOW BACK”
I was tasked with creating a piece of furniture out of 1/2in plywood, using only a CNC machine. For this project I opted to create depth out of this prodomenitely two dimensional material.
The creation process took around 60 hours, sketch to finish. Much of this time was spent sanding and grinding away wood chips in order to slide pieces into the teeth of the structure pieces. Focusing on the details of this project to ensure a fit without glue or hardware was of the utmost importance.
The build process was grueling and required astute attention to detail to ensure fit finish and overall functionality.
In total there were over 100 components to this chair.
Upon completion this chair was featured along side fellow students in the Fine arts building on the Walla Walla University campus in College Place Washington. Due to it’s lack of fastening material, the project had to be disassembled and re-assembled in the location for such a large move.
Trust the process
There were many times, many nights spent in the lab during this project that I was unsure, wanting to restart entirely, but through perseverance I am happy with the end results, and grateful for the experience.
